MY EXPERIENCE: YUM YUM

I am always on the lookout for shakes for my smoothies as I don’t eat in the morning; I do smoothies or green smoothies. I tried Shake the Crave and I was transfixed: this really tastes GOOD! You know I would tell you the truth, and the truth is I was stunned at the delicious quality of this shake. I followed the directions and put the vanilla flavor (I tried the chocolate second) and Almond Breeze Coconut Milk in my NutriBullet and poured it into my favorite mug (the truth is I broke all my glasses).

The taste is sweet, a little tart and flush with coconut. The chocolate has cocoa as a flavoring and it is even better than that famous McDees milkshake. I loved it!

Easy peezy and absolutely delicious. This will be my morning shake for a long time coming (I also shook some coconut flakes on the vanilla to give it some jazz).

WHAT IS BARE FRUIT?

Bare Fruit is a new “snack” that consists of 100% apple chips with the equivalent of three apples in each bag.  The only additions are the spices: cinnamon, lime, caramel, sea salt as designated on each bag of different apple types.  And oh man, are they delicious!

I don’t know if you all know that I am in my organic and unprocessed food stage, but for one month I have eaten only green smoothies, natural shakes, and a bit of chicken or fish in salads.  I feel better, better, best – I was falling apart trying to keep up the energy for blogging, writing, and rescuing dogs!  And Clem my doxie was sick.  I had to build up some energy and fast!  My answer: try the raw life and eat well.  I always eat this way anyway but I had fallen off the wagon and was munching out on the run: YUCK!  No way for a Broad to Be!  From the Bare Fruit website:

MY EXPERIENCE: 

These chunky chips of apple are simply refreshing and delicious.  They are crisp.  I usually buy dried apples and they taste gunky and squishy, so I loved the crunch and freshness of Bare Apple.  The flavors I tried (and they were gone in 3 days!  Sorry I ate them so fast I forgot to take pictures!!):

• Fuji Red and Granny Smith

I could not tell the difference between the All Natural and the Organic, I just kept chunking them away, and loved every bite.  Delicious, natural and low calorie and fits right in with my lifestyle.

May is Mediterranean Diet Month

and We Have Some Yum Yums for You!

MUSTARD GIRL All American MUSTARDS

I’m hoping these declensions are grammatically correct!  I just put a taste of Mustard Girl yellow mustard in my mouth and I am so overwhelmed with tanginess that I can’t spell!

It’s after MIDNIGHT, the Candy Fairy Arrives

Since I am single, I live my own schedule.  Clem (my dachshund) and I are early risers, so 9 PM is jump on the bed and open a new novel to read and review.  As I wander about the pages, and start getting into the drama of the tale, my stomach starts to growl and I reach for … the clock… I put the novel down… and NOW it is MIDNIGHT and I am wide awake.  Midnight.  The time for night terrors and magic pumpkins.  Is it the bed?  Did I spend too much time on that crime novel that scared me to death?  The mattress?  WHY CAN’T I SLEEP????

Ah ha! I know!  I NEED a TREATS BOX!  Different candy and crackers from all over the world!  And my monthly subscription box came today.  Whew!  I’m whipping out some caramels and skipping the counting of sheep!

I am generally a great eater.  Show me chard and I salivate.  Throw in a few organic carrots and kale and I’ll start my blender for a good greenie.  Protein powder is a staple in this house.  HOWEVER…when I read a good book, I get hungry.  I have done this since I was a little girl.  And I want something – EXOTIC and sweet!

When the TREATS box came across my desk I yelped!  What could be better than a good novel AND candy from all over the world?  What a great idea, I thought.  Absolutely genius.

TREATS is a subscription monthly box of candy from around the world, a different country each month.  I was sent a box of Asian deliciousness all the way from Japan to try. The quality of the Japanese box of treats was out of this world.  I cannot think of a better gift to a child, teenager or adult on your gift list. Very different, and very unique, this gift box of candy is Numero Uno on my list of Ten Best Things I Have Ever Sampled to Review.

I was thrilled to see a box FULL of Japanese candy and cracker snacks.  And even more thrilled to eat them.

WHAT I DISCOVERED

The Japanese goodies that I sampled proved delicious.  The cotton candy had a very different texture and was not so much sweet as tart and tingly on the tongue.  The Happy Hippo candy bar sent me into a baritone scream:  the best, absolutely best taste sensation.  The chocolate was gooey but not too sweet, and the entire small bar was the best thing I have ever eaten.  Truly.

I could wax poetic here about every single snack in the box; I have never experienced such a rich and taste bud prolific box of treats.  Each one was better than the last.

SO WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

My 10 item box contained:

• Fruit Gummy Assortment (Kasugai) – TART, TERRIFIC
• Soy Sauce Potato Crisps (Jagabee) – You have to try these they raise the bar on salty treats, light, spot on, crisp
• Giant Caplico Strawberry (Glico) – one of my favorite items, this is a strawberry covered chocolate crisp shaped like an ice cream cone. The strawberry and chocolate had an entirely different taste and texture and I have never tasted such a delight in my life!
• Baked Shrimp Chips (Uha) – gourmand! Delicioso! OH MY!!!!!  Just a tad of salt, a crunch of shrimp and this is heaven!
• Cola Ouccho (Uha) – cola flavored chewies – so different even the texture, caramel like, is different!
• Watapachi Cotton Candy (Meiji) – textural adventure!
• Pocky Tsubu Tsubu (Glicko) – strawberry flavored paradise sticks like biscotti but not hard
• Himemaru (Amanoya) – Little rice tasting cracker crunchies that are again not as salty as American crackers, and with a texture that is lighter – impossible to explain but unbelievably superb taste
• Milk Caramel (Morinaga) – these lasted – the entire box – about two seconds as I devoured them. Again, a more sophisticated and addictive taste than American caramel
• Kaki-no-tane (Uegaki) – rice spheres, with a soy sauce taste, very small little crackers very good

JUST WATER!

I received two bottle of JUST WATER the other day and I loved the packaging as well as the GREEN thought behind the manufacturing and processing of a spring water that tastes this good.  Clem and I devour water on our treks and hikes around Utah, and I always think of those plastic bottles I leave behind in the Recycling Bin with dread: more dead ducks, more plastic in a world that doesn’t need it!  And the water doesn’t taste good in plastic bottles.

JUST WATER has found a way to bring 100% spring water sourced from the Glens Falls Watershed in the Adirondack Mountains to us with responsible monitoring and conservation practices for the source and surrounding wilderness.  Is this on my BEST BUY list? You bet!

THE PACKAGE

Lean Mean Bodalicious Broads Breakfast Breads

with an All Natural Flair

(Gluten free if you do NOT use wheat flour!!)

I always go to Recipe.com and feel like a complete cheat and failure.  In my day (long, long ago!) women handed each other recipes with a handshake – it was within the portal of Being a Good Neighbor.  At any rate, I wanted to try out these delicious alternative FLOURS and so I did.  I made some changes which I will post, but either way, I ATE the entire loaf MYSELF! AND the scale didn’t even make a squeak!

And let’s face it, I would much rather be shopping than baking!  Here are some delightful recipes for those of us that love goodies, but don’t want sugar or diabetes to cramp our style!! Totally delicious!

Chocolate Zucchini Bread

• 1 ½ cup of flour (almond, coconut, spelt bought at any natural food store or Whole Foods or Trader Joes)
• ¼ cup cocoa
• 1 tsp baking soda
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• ½ tsp baking powder
• ¾ cup unsweetened or sweetened applesauce
• 3 eggs
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 medium zucchini grated
• ¼ cup milk (I used coconut milk)

Directions

1. Mix wet and dry ingredients separately.  Then add dry to wet one third at a time to moisturize and alternate with milk (total of ¼ cup milk) stirring lightly.
2. Bake at 350 degrees 45 minutes when inserted knife comes out clean.
3. You can add raisins and/or nuts to mixture if you so choose.

Banana Bread

• 2 mashed bananas (ripe ones work best)
• ¾ cup applesauce (I use unsweetened)
• 2 eggs
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• ½ cup old fashioned oatmeal
• 1 ¾ cups flour (almond, spelt, coconut or any other nonwhite flour or wheat flour)
• ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp cinnamon

Directions

1. Mix together dry and wet ingredients, 1/3 at a time, alternating with milk or coconut milk, with a total of about ¼ cup milk.
2. You can add raisins or nuts to mixture if you so desire!
3. (I also made this bread after taking an 8 ounce bag of unsalted raw almonds and used the almond paste as a substitute for the flour.  It made a moister bread.)
4. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, and insert knife in center.  If it comes out clean, done.

MOM’s Southern Style Potato Salad

Ingredients

• 2 pounds potatoes (6 medium)
• 7 hardboiled eggs
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon pepper
• ½ cup mayonnaise or salad dressing (more to taste if desired)
• ½ cup chopped celery
• ¼ cup chopped onions
• 2 chopped dill pickles or pickle relish
• Mustard (I used regular grey poupon) about ½ teaspoon to taste
• Paprika (pinch or two)
• I add a touch of vinegar if it needs it, or a pinch or two of sugar

Directions

1. Wash potatoes.  Heat 1 inch salted water (1/2 teaspoon water to one cup water) to boiling.  Add unpared potatoes.  Cover tightly heat to boiling and cook 30 to 35 minutes or until tender. Knife should go in but should not make the potatoes fall apart in water.  Do not overcook.
2. Drain.  Cook and peel.  Cut potatoes into cubes…combine in bowl with mustard, pickles, onion, salt and pepper, vinegar or sugar, 6 hardboiled eggs (equal amounts egg to potatoes) and refrigerate for several hours.
3. Put in chopped celery and two halved eggs for garnish on top.  Can also add paprika to top for serving if you wish.
4. Feeds 4 to 6 unless you love it as much as I do: then, don’t share!!!!
5. I notice that when I use Blue Sky Farm eggs, they are much more “yellow” after I hard boil them and the taste is phenomenal!

YES it does!  I took two capsules per day instead of my usual Metamucil and I found that I went to the bathroom regularly with much less gas and flatulence.  And I am sure that it will continue to get better as I use it more!  I can also take up to 6 pills a day and visit the website, where there is much more information.  I discovered everything I needed to know about Digestic and how safe it was to try!

Chocolate for the Dans and Divas!

At last!  A monthly subscription service for my favorite food in the world – CHOCOLATE!  And  not just any chocolate !  With many many artisan and organic chocolates to choose from, you can send a mini box or a full subscription box of the world’s most tantalizing chocolates to yourself or a loved one!  With free shipping for orders over $35.00, how can you go wrong?

And I love tasting new things.  I have always noticed that British chocolate is far richer and smoother than American chocolate (try a Digestif) and I realized that all chocolate is not created equal!  So when Chococurb sent me three bars of chocolate to try – I loved some, did not have the acquired taste for others.

Nibble is a 77% cocoa organic dark chocolate made of organic cocoa beans and organic cane sugar.  It was very dark, very earthy and strong a tad bitter while a tad sweet.  Very distinct, old earth flavor.  YUM!

Videri was a dark milk chocolate, 55%, with cocoa nibs, cane sugar, dry while milk and cocoa butter, also organic in a 14 ounce bar.  Absolutely pure chocolate high, smooth and creamy, richer and tarter than most chocolate bars, made in Raleigh, N.C.  Delicious.

And the last was Alma chocolate, dark salty nutty chocolate bar with 74% Dominican chocolate (pure cocoa mass, cocoa butter), pistachios, toffee (turbinado sugar, butter (milk), sea salt), hazelnuts, and sea salt. This was heaven on earth!

The point? Chococurb offers the largest selections of chocolates I have seen online and you can try something different in every monthly order!  I absolutely loved trying the different tastes and types of chocolate – and I think you will too!
